Chappy’s corner: “Need a push?”

On a snowy winter night Alice and Joe were sound asleep in their bed when the knock came at two in the morning; Joe stumbled out of bed and opened the front door. There standing before him was a man smelling of cheap booze who muttered can you give me a push.  Joe sharply told the man, “You’re drunk” and then he shut the door and went back to bed. Alice asked him, “Who was at the door?”  “Just a drunk wanting a push” replied Joe.  Alice replied, “Remember how the pastor said we should care for others.  Can you imagine being stuck somewhere and needing a push?” So, Joe changed his mind, put on his coat and snow boots and went outside and shouted, “Hey buddy are you still there? A voice answers “Yeah, I’m here!”  Joe asked “Do you still need a push?” The drunk answered, “Yes I do!”  Joe asked, “Where are you?”  The drunk replied, “I’m sitting on the swing!”

Everybody needs a push now and then. Children need a push to get them to do their homework done, to practice the piano or to do chores.  Adults need a “push” to go and exercise, to finish that home repair job or to get a physical.   Our unit’s Command Sergeant Major pushed me to get my correspondence studies done by simply saying, “Get er done!” He was right. I needed to get it done and his “push” helped me finish.

Actually his “push” was a word of encouragement.  In tough times we need words of encouragement to get us going and to keep us going.  Through the centuries many “words of encouragement” have been shared.  “We have nothing to fear but fear itself”  “Don’t’ ask what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

One great source of encouragement is the Bible.  Not only is it full of encouraging words, but the whole message is encouraging. The Bible is a story of God rescuing people who are lost. He did it by giving His Son to save us.  Due to sin, we are stuck and we can’t get out on our own. But, thankfully God sent His Son to save us and Jesus did by His suffering, death and resurrection.

Imagine a little child playing in the yard when suddenly a giant branch from a tree snaps and descends upon the child. Right before the child is crushed, the loving father pushes the child out of the way, and the child is saved while the father dies.  We would call that a great sacrifice and that is exactly what Jesus did for us. He gave His life on the cross to provide salvation for a sinful world.  But it shouldn’t surprise us that Jesus did what He did because in the Bible Jesus said, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”John 15:13

Jesus also said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all” Mark 9:35  In our world today most push and shove to be first, but Jesus pushes us to take the servant’s role as He did.  In being the servant we can serve as the one “pushing” others to keep on going!
